Young Carers
Age 5 to 17, young carers look after family members who are ill, disabled, mental health problems or is misusing alcohol or drugs.
We’re here to talk with young carers and their families to understand their situation, needs and we can support them.
Are you looking after a family member who is ill, disabled, or has mental health or addiction needs? You are not alone.
If you are under 18 and helping to look after someone in your family, you are a young carer. We know that caring can sometimes be overwhelming, tiring, or stressful alongside school and friends. Caregivers Connected Gateshead is here to make sure you have someone in your corner.
Our service is completely free and confidential. We are here to listen, help you take a break, and support you to balance your caring role with your own education and childhood.
Our Support: Making life brighter for Young Carers
Caring is a big responsibility, especially when you’re also trying to manage school and have fun. We are here to make things just a little bit easier for you.

Young Carers Assessment: A chat about you
Before we can help you, we need to understand exactly what your situation looks like. A Young Carers Assessment isn’t a test; it’s a friendly conversation between you and one of our supportive workers. Together, we will look at how caring affects your education, your health, and your happiness. This chat helps us figure out what practical help, funding, or advice we can provide to support you and your family.

Peer Support: Meet People Who ‘Get It’
Sometimes the best support comes from people your own age who understand exactly what you are going through. We offer young carer groups that provide a safe space to connect with others who also balance school and care. Many young people find making these friendships the best part of our offer.

Information, Advice and Guidance: a listening ear
No two caring roles are the same and so we’re here to help you understand the condition of the person you care for and understand what support is available to you – including support in school.
Fun Activities and Trips: take a break, be a kid and make friends!
We believe every young person deserves time to relax and just have fun. That’s why we organise regular outreach activities, day trips, and clubs specifically for young carers. It’s a chance to try something new, like alpaca walking, bowling, or art workshops, in a supportive environment where you can forget about your responsibilities for a while. It’s about letting you reclaim some of your childhood.
