Young Carers Expert Panel

Introduction

At Caregivers Connected Gateshead Young Carers Service we know that the young carers that we support are the experts in what services will help them the most. To make sure that we are delivering the support that you need, we have Expert Panels, made up of young carers of all ages, who advise and guide us on improving our services and planning activities. The Expert Panel members also work closely with Gateshead Council and the NHS, giving the young carers the opportunity to tell the council how services can be improved for young carers.

In the past, young carers have had an important role in advising Gateshead Council and the NHS on the issues that they face and what support is needed to help them in their caring role. As a result of the young carers working with representatives of Gateshead Council and the NHS, a new contract for services for young carers, that includes the support that the young carers asked for, has been awarded to Caregivers Connected Gateshead.

Being an Expert Panel Member

The Expert Panel meets monthly, on Wednesday evening, at the Metrocentre Community Hub. Although we understand that attending regular meetings can be difficult for many young carers, we ask that Expert Panel members attend as many meetings as possible. The meeting dates are given to members in advance and reminders are sent out to members prior to each meeting. 2 members of the young carers team attend each meeting.

As an Expert Panel member you will take an active role in:

  • Choosing and planning activities
  • Developing groups and drop-ins for young carers
  • Identifying what support would help young carers
  • Working with Gateshead Council and the NHS to make sure young carers are getting the support they need.
  • Supporting the Young Carers team at events, to raise awareness of young carers
  • Planning fundraising activities
  • Being a ‘voice’ for young carers in Gateshead.

If you would like to become a member of the Expert Panel, please email the Young Carers Service Lead, Carol Watson.
