What being a Young Carer means
Being a young carer means you help look after someone who needs support due to an illness, disability, mental health condition or addiction.
- You are not alone: thousands of young people across Gateshead balance caring responsibilities with school, college, or work.
- It’s okay to feel overwhelmed: taking care of someone else can be rewarding, but it can also feel exhausting, stressful or lonely at times.
- Your wellbeing matters: your health, education, and peace of mind are just as important as the person you care for.
How your ID card helps you
Your Young Carer ID card lets professionals know the you have extra responsibilities. Showing your card can help you:
- At school or college: lets teachers know you’re a young carer. They can help you in school, offering deadline extensions, permission to check your phone or extra support – every school’s offer will vary depending on their rules.
- At the pharmacy or doctors: showing the card lets them know you are involved in the medical care of the person you care for and for prescription pickups.
- In the community: your ID card may be able to help show that you’re a carer and let you get extra discounts.

“The staff are very supportive and understanding of young people. They have helped me think about how to not get too stressed and how I can talk to my brother too.”
